This modern 103 bed ageing-in-place facility was commissioned by the Salvation Army as part of their national redevelopment program. The design recognises the regional idiom, with rural "barn-like" buildings linked together with light-weight walkways to break down the mass of a 103 bed residence.
A number of "green" features have been incorporated in the design, including subterranean rainwater collection and recycling tanks as well as ozone treatment for the laundry. Large verandahs give the opportunity for an outdoor living environment for residents from rural areas, maximising views over the valley to the hills beyond. Roof overhangs provide good shading from the summer sun, while allowing winter sun to penetrate into the building.
The idea of landscaping for the aged care facility was abandoned in favour of gravel and rocks, as Goulburn exists with an absence of water required for irrigation. The resulting desert landscape which includes gravel and pebbles blends in with the buildings finishes.
Gill Waminda was awarded the Master Buildings Association NSW Award for Excellence for Aged Care buildings over $10 million.
